E-J in the 80’s

Repowering of Rockefeller CenterMOMA & NY Hospital

Noteworthy projects under E-J’s close management have been the repowering, with high voltage and complete new distribution, of power to all Rockefeller Center Buildings east of the Avenue of the Americas.  The electrical reconstruction of the Museum of Modern Art has been completed with 600V services, specialized lighting, card access system, security cameras, motion detectors, and back up power generation.  In addition, E-J completed the entire new C.V. Starr Pavilion of New York Hospital, incorporating electrical requirements for latest medical systems.

AT&T Corporate Headquarters Rhiga Royal Hotel

E-J Electric was selected as the electrical contractor for the optical fiber and copper cable broadband systems for AT&T’s new 37 story World Headquarters in Manhattan, which was designed by architects John Burgee and Philip Johnson.  We installed all power, lighting and communication systems.  Upon completion, the AT&T Building was one of the most lavish and noteworthy corporate headquarters in the United States.  E-J was also contracted to complete another impressive project, Rhiga Royal Hotel, New York City’s tallest hotel.  E-J finished the electrical facilities on a fast track basis.

Lord & Taylor & St. John’s Mausoleum

E-J installed 24/7 emergency power on a turnkey basis for Lord & Taylor’s national computer system, including battery backup, emergency generation, and all electrical and mechanical systems.  We also completed all the electrical work for NYC’s largest mausoleum, St. John’s. 

Financial/Data

E-J installed the complete Security Systems for Merrill Lynch Data Center and ADT/WFC.  Additional systems installed included power, lighting, communications and fire alarm.

Educational

E-J performed the complete electrical installation for John Jay College of Criminal Justice’s new campus on the West Side of New York City with classrooms, theater, and athletic facilities.   E-J also worked for LaGuardia High School, performing the installation of their state-of-the-art auditorium and theatre as the final step in completing the country’s leading Performing Arts High School.  E-J installed a 200 KW generator to provide power to critical school loads.

Performing Arts
Pier 84

E-J designed and constructed the entire electrical system at the Pier 84 Performing Arts Center.  In the Radio City Music Hall Theater and dressing rooms, we installed new service and distribution equipment, lighting, stage power and distribution and variable frequency drives for new motors as well as providing the power and distribution for concessions.  Radio City continued to use E-J for their major upgrades. 

Con Edison

E-J also performed work at many Con Edison generating plants including Waterside, Ravenswood and Astoria.

Tony Mann, Third Generation in E-J

Of the many noteworthy jobs completed by E-J and its affiliates, a number have been directed and coordinated by Tony Mann, a third generation family member who continues the tradition of hands-on leadership at E-J Electric.

Tony Mann joined E-J in 1986 after receiving an Electrical Engineering degree from Tufts University and an MBA from the Kellogg Business School of Northwestern University.  He now serves as President with extensive experience and professional affiliations which have made him an industry leader.  He holds Master Electrician Licenses in New York and Connecticut. 

Under his leadership, E-J has completed over $1 Billion in leading electric construction projects. As President of E-J, he has formed many divisions, including E-J Transit, E-J Power, E-J Connecticut/Westchester and our Retail Division (Mutual Electric).  He is also responsible for the formation of E-J Communication Systems, a subsidiary dedicated to systems engineering, connectivity and integration requirements of high-technology facilities that require state-of-the-art telecommunications and information systems. 

These divisions have led E-J to a large range of projects from stadiums, water treatment and power plants to office buildings, transit facilities, schools and theatres. Notable projects under his leadership include: Yankee Stadium, New York Times Headquarters, Bank of America Mission Critical, 11 Times Square, Astoria Power & Poletti 500 MW Power Plants, WTC Path Station, Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History, Jet Blue JFK Terminal and the USTA National Tennis Center.

Data Communication, LAN and Fiber Optics

E-J Communication Systems was established to promote practical solutions for today’s advanced business communication requirements.  This operation actually started many years ago when E-J was selected to provide the expertise to fashion the 911 Police Command Center in New York City.

E-J Communication Systems, a single resource vendor, furnishes, installs and maintains a full range of leading edge communication products and services.  They provide structured communication cable and premises distribution systems, local and wide area data.  The E-J staff was expanded with dedicated engineers and highly skilled technicians, experts in all facets of design, implementation and maintenance of the most complex voice, data and video networks.

Noteworthy communication installations have included the primary data center for Merrill Lynch at the World Financial Center, optical fiber and copper cable broadband systems at American Airlines, as well as installation and maintenance of all voice, data, audio, video and satellite, security, and fire-safety systems for the United Nations buildings in New York.

Other E-J Communication System projects include Sprint, AIG International, the New York Public Library, Sempra Solutions, Montefiore Medical Center and over $10 Million of telecommunication and Multi-Media systems for the U.S. Tennis Center.

Studio and Infrastructure

E-J’s expertise continues with its involvement in the complete studio and infrastructure installation at both NBC and CBS studios.  At the end of the decade, E-J performed all the electrical and broadcast work to move David Letterman into the Ed Sullivan Theater.

Fiber Optic and Terminal Expansion
Delta Airlines & British Airways

Extensive fiber optic and terminal renovation projects were completed for American Airlines, Tower Airlines, Trump Shuttle, Delta Airlines and British Airways at JFK Airport.  E-J installed the Fire Alarm System for the new Terminal 1 and constructed the Port Authority Police Station, Building 269 at JFK as well as the TWA Ambassador Club.

The expansion of the British Air Terminal at JFK International Airport required installation of a 5kv substation and power, a broadband LAN, fire alarm and public address system, as well as decorative and functional lighting.

LIRR New Car Repair Facility

E-J completed the $22 million dollar expansion of the Long Island Railroad’s new car Repair Facility.  Spread over a 15 acre site, the scope of this job included a great deal of signal work, a train-motion detection system, rail lighting, high-bay industrial lighting, public address system and complete DC power system, in addition to AC power distribution and utilization equipment.  One of the more interesting facets of this project was the automated storage and retrieval system, which consisted of robot guided vehicles, 72 terminals, five miles of cable, bar-coding inventory control, conveyors and a certified broadband communications system.  This Car Repair Facility is one of the most advanced robotic systems in the world.

Educational
Columbia University

E-J was chosen by Columbia University to furnish emergency generators to feed all campus buildings.  This design/build contract included general construction, mechanical installations and had to meet all Fire Department regulations.  Other educational facilities included Riverdale Country Day School, the Columbia Law School, Pace University Law School, Long Island University Brooklyn Campus and Rockefeller University Cogeneration, high tech laboratories and computer facilities.

Industrial and Power
US Postal Service General Mail Facility & Visy Paper

E-J Electric completed the US Postal Service General Mail Facility, the largest automated mail facility in the country consisting of 800,000 square feet and extending a full city block.  This new, highly mechanized mail handling facility has computerized control of 25,000 feet of conveyors, a supervised control and data acquisition system (SCADA), programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), and remote terminals, as well as the more common-place AC power distribution and utilization equipment.

In addition E-J was chosen as the fast track electrical contractor, on Visy Paper, a huge paper recycling operation in Staten Island.  The plant was the first major industrial operation to come into New York in 50 years and was opened on time and on budget.

E-J completed a major upgrade including ISO Phase Bus in the Waterside Power Generating Plant.  Generator installations for the United Nations and Mt. Sinai were also completed.

Surety Assignments

Another facet of E-J’s expertise has been the completion, sometimes as the Electrical and other times the Turnkey Construction Contractor, for Surety Companies and Owners of various complicated infrastructure projects.  These include the Manhattan Bridge, The Transit Authority’s Nevins Street and Myrtle Avenue Stations and the College Point Bus Terminal.

Connecticut/Westchester

E-J established an office in New Canaan which was later moved to Stamford to serve the Connecticut/Westchester Markets.  Its first clients included AIG and Ashforth Properties.

Design Build

Our Design Build expertise have included Rockefeller Center chiller upgrades, several major United Nations programs and Columbia University generators.

Trading Floors and Financial Institutions

Examples of E-J’s experience in Trading Floors and Financial Institutions include Merrill Lynch, Federal Reserve Bank, 1st Albany Securities, Cowen & Co., Brown Brothers Harriman, Bank of California and General Electric Asset Management.

Energy Conservation and Maintenance

E-J engaged in energy conservation and maintenance of commercial buildings such as the Colgate Building, the International Toy Center, NY Coliseum, the Gift Building and the Empire State Building, a growing business for the company.  Our skilled engineers analyze client’s energy requirements and recommend methods to conserve and operate facilities more efficiently.

United States Tennis Center

E-J also handled the complete installation and maintenance of the United States Tennis Center, home of the annual US Open Tennis Championship.  This facility included a 42-acre site with the new Arthur Ashe Stadium as its centerpiece.  E-J was involved in the maintenance of electrical service, distribution, emergency distribution, generator, transformers, panels and lighting. Maintenance also included the Low Voltage System comprised of Broadcast Cable Plant, Internal Television Distribution System including Head End System, Campus Wide Public Address System, Scoring System and Campus Wide Telephone Cable Plant.  During the 3-week US Open we had around the clock support for maintenance and operations.

Hospitals and Health Care Facilities
Bronx Lebanon Hospital

E-J is also highly qualified in the design and installation of electrical systems for the specialized needs of hospitals and other health care facilities.  The firm has successfully completed a wide array of projects including an assignment as trade manager on a new construction and renovation job for Bronx-Lebanon Hospital which resulted in $2.5 million cost reduction and under-budget completion.  We also performed the switchgear replacement for Beth Israel Hospital which was performed without interrupting electrical service.  Additionally, turn-key installations of x-ray facilities, CAT Scan equipment, and power distribution at Mt. Sinai Hospital; and design and installation of a centralized Class E fire alarm system in the fifteen building Montefiore Hospital complex, where E-J was also responsible for electrical maintenance on a day-to-day basis.  We provided electrical systems for laboratories, operating rooms, laundry facilities and cooling towers.

Other hospital/health care facility clients include Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Cornell University Medical College, Deepdale General Hospital, Hospital for Joint Diseases, Lenox Hill Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Maimonides Medical Center, Manhattan Ear Eye and Throat Hospital, St. Barnabas Hospital, St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center, St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center of NY, and Victory Memorial Hospital.

NYC Police Dept. Forensic Laboratory

The six floor renovation of the NYC Police Dept.’s Forensic Laboratory included E-J’s installing multiple technical integrated systems in the entire building in the Labs.  These systems included Power, Acid Control Systems, State of the Art Security and Fire Alarm Systems.
